ENGLISH ISSUES

The ghost girl by Andrea Sánchez 2º ESO D

There is a small village in a far country. It is called “The haunted village”. Everybody wonders the reason of this particular name. I was asking about it and I discovered that long ago a small orphan girl was abandoned alone there. The girl wandered around and nobody helped her .She was starving, so she finally died. The village people felt ashamed so they burned her body instead of burying it in a try to forget it. They said it as a sort of a curse. Years went by but nobody forgot the small orphan girl. Inexplicably, many village inhabitants have appeared dead and burnt since then. Maybe there is a real curse…Who knows it??

An awful experience by Beatriz Jiménez 2º ESO D

I was sleeping when a slight noise woke me up…At first I didn´t know what it was… but I thought they were footsteps approaching my bed… I didn´t want to sleep at all. I supposed that my father or my sister had entered into my bedroom looking for something but I was not sure…I was getting nervous. The steps began to sound closer to my bed…Then I did not hear anything. I was very afraid so I shouted, but my parents did not come to help me… That was a horrible nasty experience. Maybe it was a nightmare… I was not sure. Anyway, be careful tonight!!!

My Life in twenty years´ time by Marina Rocino 2º ESO B

In twenty years´ time  I will be 34 years old. I think that I will be quite good. Maybe I will have two children- I´ll call them Angel and Marina- and I´ll live with my husband in a comfortable house. It will be a big house, of course. I will have an amazing car into my garage. I will live in New York and I´ll meet famous film stars. My dream would be to get all my goals in my life. My children will study in a private school and I´ll do my best to look after them and to give them the best. I will always miss my parents when I´m abroad. Then I will really value the things I have learn from my teachers

A strange experience, by Ángela Ruiz 2º ESO B

Last night I saw a bright white light that did not let me to sleep. I looked out through the window and I saw it. It was an UFO. I nearly fainted because of the shock. I felt myself flying asleep. When I woke up I was inside a strange spaceship. I was surrounded by small green beings. The odd thing about it was… that I was not afraid of them. They began to talk to me in my own language. They were very funny! At seven o´clock my alarm clock rang and I woke up. I had had a strange dream, hadn´t I ?...

ORDERING IN A RESTAURANT

Here you have some excellent practice from VOA News; you will learn how to order coffee in formal and informal English as well as how to order breakfast and some advice on tips in the USA. You can also learn how to order lunch and how to order dinner.

You can improve your pronunciation (by listening and repeating). Just follow the instructions and do the activities. It's American English. Enjoy it!

Arranging to go out

Can you arrange to go out with someone in English? What would you do if an attractive person wanted to have a coffee with you? This practice will help you arrange to meet him / her (if they ever phone you)…

First of all, listen to a conversation between Pina & Michael. They want to meet but they are very busy.
Listen and find this information:

-      What is Pina doing on Saturday, Sunday and Monday?
-      When can they meet and what are they going to do?

Did you hear the expressions they use to make suggestions?
Now look and check the expressions and the answers to the questions. There is also a model dialogue you can practise with a friend.

 Useful expressions to make suggestions
Would you like to (go out)?
Let’s (go out…).
Why don’t we ( go out..)?
Shall we (go out…)?
What about (going out)?

To express a decision
I’ll (see you at 9pm)

To talk about a fixed plan
I’m going to see some friends this weekend.
I’m seeing some friends this weekend.

Now why don’t you use these structures to practise a
dialogue with a friend? Use this plan to help you at first
and then practise without it. Remember to listen to the
model dialogue of Pina and Michael for ideas.

A: Would you like to _______________ this weekend?
B: Oh, I’m sorry. I’m busy. On Saturday I’m_________ing.
A: What about Sunday?
B: I’m sorry. I’m _____________ing. Why don’t we
      ____________________on Monday?
A: I’m busy then. I’m _____________ing. Are you free
      on Tuesday?
B: Yes, what about ______________ing?
A: That’s a good idea. Shall we _______________?
B: OK. Let’s _______________________.
      I’ll __________________.
A: Fine. See you on Tuesday.
